A good game, but I think it takes the retro aspect too far in the severity of its punishments -- I got a game over about half/two-thirds of the way through and it just will take too long to play again.

In lieu of a review, let me just say this:

I had three tabs open in my browser which I had not yet looked at. It was pretty late and I decided I was going to choose one of them to look at before going to sleep. One of them was this, the other two were porn. I choose to read this, and I was not disappointed.

Thanks for posting this!

When I first read through the AW rules, I was definitely taken aback by a) the sex moves, and b) the deliberately broad choices regarding gender and appearance. (Not, like, squinked over it, it was just new to me to see things like that in an RPG book.)

This post, and the AW forum discussion Propentine linked to above, are terrific. I'm starting a new AW game tomorrow, and now I am all fired up to pay closer attention to this stuff.

Monsterhearts, another "Powered by the Apocalypse" game, while not as pulpy, has its heart in the right place when it comes to queerness, I think. There's a great article and discussion about it here: http://www.gamingaswomen.com/posts/2012/04/monsterhearts-queerness-and-the-supernatural-teen-romance-genre/

Also, thank you so much for that link, Porpentine!

Dungeon world, which is pretty much wholesale based on apocalypse world is good for this too. I'm more of a fantasy fan than a sci-fi one but both are great at what they do, making roleplaying fun and not getting bogged down in restrictive rulesets.

more information on the queer/gender aspect of the game http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=5823.0;wap2

"Instead of choosing your character's gender, you choose gendered components of your character's appearance."

iirc, feminine, masculine, ambiguous, that sort of that thing. this is the kind of thoughtful design we need.
