rescue: the beagles

nenad jalsovec’s rescue: the beagles is in public beta. it’s a game about rescuing puppies from scientists, which is a pretty rad premise; i appreciate the relevence of using real villians in a game. the pixel puppies and their antagonists roam three planes of procedurally-generated landscape (gorgeous earth-tone silhouettes) which you hop between using the arrow keys.

deceptively, the game is actually all about negotiating height (probably because the way the planes are layered suggests depth, not height). the protagonist can’t jump very high or fall very far without getting killed, though there are items that allow her to do both these things. most of the game is in picking out safe routes between the three planes as they scroll past each other, and doing it as quickly as possible (if the puppies wander off-screen, they’re lost). you’ll probably spend a while learning how far you can fall without dying.

if this were my game, i’d ditch the need to pick up parachutes or ropes and have them always been available to the player. time is more of a tempering factor than scarcity with these items: they’re both slow to use. the item counts are tucked way in the corner of the screen, where i’m not looking, and i tend not to know i’ve run out of parachutes until i hit the ground. the owls can go, too: my owl count always numbers in the hundreds when enemies take one to two hits to kill. enemies aren’t even obstacles the way the game stands. and the protagonist should go into a flailing animation once she’s hit a lethal fall distance: something to indicate to the player exactly how far is safe to fall and how far isn’t.

    There are two beagle puppies at the kennel that I want to die. They are horrible horrible hellspawn. Just a few minutes ago, one of them pooped and the other one was eating the poop right when it came out of the butthole. Then there was a big sloppy mess that I had to hose down.

    the reason beagles are a common test animal is because they will breed regardless of how much room they have to live, and dont ever fight amongst eachother. also they have HUGE litters. stanford research center or whatever its called will call known beagle breeders and showers when they are done experimenting and always have hte same lines “if you dont adopt these beagles, we’re just gonna kill em” i used to have letters and stuff from stanford to a friend of mine (shes a beagle breeder)

    I think the rope/parachute limit was put in to stop you from just waltzing all over the place and planning out your route instead. It definitely shifts the focus of the game from just contesting with enemies to having to deal with the environment. Maybe one limit could be dropped and the other time-based and you’re definitely right about the flailing animation and the silly owls.

    Actually I don’t see the need to have to shoot shit at all, shouldn’t we be just rescuing the beagles not running and gunning around like a WWF commando?
