antifascista and drowning

i heard about antifascista (link to play online) through my friend porpentine, an editor for freeindiegames. i think she’s correct in saying that this game really wanted to be hypertext of the kind that twine enables – there were a few instances where i got hung up on guessing the next thing to type, where all the choices in the game are fairly straightforward. it’s that kind of text game. nevertheless, as an american queer bobbing around the poverty line, the message of this game resonated with me. it reminded me where my hope comes from.

and on the subject of queerness and hypertext, i’m hosting a game called drowning, made by my friend skyler in twine.

Holding hands was nice, I wish the author had added more ways to express affection and get feedback therefrom.

I finally beat it! I really wish that the author had made more things examinable or manipulable. I don’t think it’s possible to get through the game without a lot of go-fish typing, and subsequent frustration at the on-rails characters (“say something damn it!”).

Anyways some spoilers are, to advance past the first scene, x diego’s eye; the third, say to diego; the fourth, take off shirt and jeans. Did anyone else who finished use a different path?

the part that i got hung up on was the last scene.

    SPOILERS

when my attempts to kiss or fuck diego were met with disappointed refusal, i assumed that’s not what he wanted of me, not that i was overdressed. certainly his response could have been worded to suggest that my clothes were the problem. it’s important that the player takes action herself, but i don’t know that making it with your partner needs to be a PUZZLE.

nothing else in the game i really got hung up on for to long.

  5. Many things could’ve been better worded, some things were really obvious and I felt the puzzle was to figure out how to make the game understand that I had understood it.

Maybe a Twine story would’ve been too linear, now that I think of it, just a single link per passage that takes you to the next one. It’s a beautiful game though, and the last sentence is truly a literary nailed-it.

The funnier moment I got was:

He nods with some difficulty, rising shakily from the cushion. His hand finds yours. There’s only one thing left to say.

    >say i love you
    (to Diego)
    There is no reply.

    >talk to diego
You work up the courage to say something.

    1) “I love you.”

    He only grins.
