forbidden space

my friend andi was really excited that nasa was hosting a game jam on her birthday. she wanted to rope a bunch of us in to making games with her thirtieth birthday – then she found out that you had to book tickets months in advance. BULLSHIT. not to be deterred, she had a bunch of friends over to my place for a KICKED OUT OF NASA GAME JAM. (they’re still here. it’s still going on.)

one of the suggested themes was “excluded from space.” the worst idea i could think of was a game that bans the player from using the spacebar. but that wasn’t very interesting to me, until i thought of the possibility of imposing the spacebar ban on the player’s normal computer habits.

you can download FORBIDDEN SPACE here. when you run it, it’ll create a small window that will stay on your desktop. DON’T minimize it – but feel free to slide it into the corner. then use your computer as normal. but DON’T touch the spacebar!

liz is over, so i had her do the sound. happy birthday, andi!

Haha. You didn’t need to book in advance. There ended up being around half the open spots they had filled, so everyone who came without a reservation got in.

Too bad, because it would’ve been cool to meet you.

Hi Adamsk, yeah, I got that email too– on Friday, too late to alter our plans for the weekend… ^_^; I’ll probably be ducking in today cuz I live near Ames but it’s a little harder to organize a caravan of five people from Oakland to Mountain View on less than 24 hours notice. Maybe this is why game jams that require you to get a ticket ahead of time are normally rare…? Anyway it doesn’t matter because we held the jam at Anna’s place and it was AWESOME.

Yeah, the GlobalGameJam at Cogswell College sort of felt the same to be honest. Usually when we hold small local jams it’s all just an announcement around a month ahead of time and we don’t require signups. Of course, we’re not expecting and don’t get nearly the same turnout either so that’s the trade-off.

Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I didn’t hear about this. Just a few days late too.

A NASA game jam could have sounded so amazing but that’s lame that you had to book and all that.

I’m getting ready to set up yr game at work. I do graphic design, so I hardly touch the spacebar enough so I’ll completely forget and, I’m guessing, get upset. Looking forward to it~
