funny princess is a better platformer than super princess peach.
(though, to be fair, the former doesn’t feature a magic vibe wand with which the princess can frustrate herself, bring herself to tears, and/or call forth squeals of delight.) funny princess is a hack of super mario bros. by an author who goes by “ultimessiah.” i couldn’t find a link to a patch (i grabbed the rom out of a torrent), so i made my own, which can be downloaded above. (i hope that’s cool, ultimessiah.)
this hack is full of neat ideas. it’s also maybe the first hack i’ve seen to splice tiles and sprites from different games without having them look incohesive – the games in this case being mostly super mario bros. 3, yoshi’s island, and the american super mario bros. 2, the first game to let us play as princess toadstool. it’s also one of few hacks to feature genuinely hard jumps without (usually) feeling unreasonable.

whats incohesive about that hack
oh the flashing backgrounds i guess?
those giant crystals just don’t go with the simple design of megaman’s or his enemies’ sprites at all. and every other stage of that game looks completely different (one features characters from kirby’s dream land). none of it really coheres, and it ends up looking like a kind of frankenstein’s monster of completely different-looking games.
