everyone is an invader makes space invaders into a two-player game by mirroring the game along its middle, with one player at the top and one at the bottom. the neat side-effect of this is that, once players have made some holes in the wall of invaders, they can take potshots at each other through the gaps. what i’d really like is if players had the choice of teaming up against the invaders for a cooperative victory or sabotaging each other’s efforts for an individual win.

The Super Game Boy port of Space Invaders included a mode similar to this as a two-player link cable mode. It offered an ordinary game of Space Invaders with a UFO at the top that mimicked the opponent’s actions - its shots ignoring the invaders.
This Lucaz guy looks quite interesting.
Hate to burst your bubble, but Space Invaders II (the game designed by Midway, not Space Invaders Deluxe) featured the same head-to-head concept.
